“I thought Dilla was just a rapper,” asked a friend of mine who was there by mere coincidence. I began to reply, but the opening riff from “Workinonit” drowned out my voice. Maybe it’s a good thing more hip-hop kids weren’t in the house — one of them would have replied to that statement with the business end of a broken bottle.
The Detroit hip-hop producer passed away on February 10, 2006, but his influence is inescapable in 2010. The fanatical zeal of the Dilla fanbase has resulted in an outpouring of tributes, but few like this.
Stray Phrases is a jazz trio consisting of Storm Siegel on drums, Dave Mainella on piano, and Evan Crane on bass. On Sunday October 17, 2010, they covered J Dilla’s classic instrumental album Donuts from beginning to end. Metal Lungies is proud to bring you a recording of the whole set.”

A few things have happened in the past couple of months, 1. The blog has turned into more of a photo log and 2. It is no longer informative. The reason has been because I've been massively busy in trying to get a couple of projects going on a personal level.

One of the projects is SBJCT: Design Firm.

From the beginning of The Noise Academy we've always wanted to create an entity that allows for our in-house designers to create and pick work that they've wanted to and not the other way around. This brings us to the concept of SBJCT, initially a brain child of three designers from EK5OBITION, it quickly turned into a collaboration projected with TNA.

Currently we are developing our own identity as well as building the base clientele for the design agency. I will let you in on all the details once the firm goes public, but until then you can check out the projects that I've been personally involved with here, but once the site is built you can check it out here also.

The Noise Acadademy has also taken off on another level. The Booking/Talent side has created an A/R section that focuses on building local talent with the same hard working work ethic as TNA. On the flip side, the Production side has some of the best PA's in town where we lend our blistered hands to the background of the entertainment industry.

I would love to tell you details, but the best I can do is show you some shots of events that we were a part of ~~(stupid disclousure agreements.)~~

From a small idea to an actual company TNA has become official with an LLC and employees. I'm not really sorry that you are getting spamed by TNA, because we do hold good events. If you're not actually into the music, you should go out to the events and see how the background of entertainment works, it's not usually pretty but always fun.

Lastly I also created a Photo Log to clean up the clutter that has been going with this site. If first started out as a project for a friend, but they decided to back out and now I am keeping it for myself. So the initial site will be mainly for information and just random stories just as how it was before. enjoy!

A couple of months ago I shot this image for EK5OBITION. The images captured from the photoshoot were actually for the TORSO book which released a couple of weeks ago. I almost forgot about the project until the book got published and EK5OBITION received their copy.

A couple of things have come in the mail and landed themselves on my desk. The new Vans OTW collection is on point for your "grown up game." The Larkin has an update on premium materials on a very classic silhouette.

I've also managed to pick up the new John Legend & The Roots Album. The "Wake Up" album is a society conscious project created by John Legend and produced by The Roots. Check out the marketing materials about the album, it'll open up your mind.

It has been a while since I bought a Roots album. IMO, The Roots didn't bring much to the Hip Hop table with their previous two albums but with this one and the history behind it, it reminds me of The Roots of old. It is refreshing to hear organic instrumentation in a world of electronica.

I had the chance to check out this concert, but because of work (audiotistic) I had to pass my tickets to a friend.

I’ve been super busy recently and the only way to catch up with some of my friends are thru these social media outlets, but then last night I came to a realization of some of these media outlets… They don’t allow me to talk to my friends in person.

In the past years I’ve always made it a point to hang out with my friends in person and create a network through potent potables and hilarious conversations. I have never wanted to use the social media outlets as a reason to talk to someone, but technology always gets the best of us.

A new social media is Four Square (even yelp allows you to do it.) If you’re not familiar with the app you better get on it because it is the newest social medium to hit the streets. It allows you to actually “check-in” and says you are at the location real time. From there the more you “check-in” at the location you become the “Mayor” or basically the king of the hill (nerd alert for all my FPS heads.)

With that said, I need to put out a disclaimer, this is my opinion and solely mine it doesn’t reflect the opinions of the companies I work for.

Now that that is out of the way, I find this new thing very disturbing. It is a stalker app! There is no longer anonymity anymore; everyone is trying to get his or her 15 min of fame. Personally I wouldn’t want anyone to know where I’ve been.

There is an issue about privacy on the Internet, but no one takes responsibility for his or her own actions of the Internet. People don’t understand that if you don’t want to have something known then don’t post it.

Before I get fired from something or I open my mouth too much and get in trouble I will leave it at that.

“I met Nottz at Nightlife's Dilla Tribute in L.A. and we just kept in contact. I had always been a fan of Nottz since the 90s. He sent me a bunch of beats and at first I had no idea what to do with any of them, but eventually it hit me. I sang a hook for him on his album as well.
The song is a cover of a cat named Otis Leavill which is one of my all time fav soul sides, but relatively unknown 45. I don't think Nottz even knew it. I actually even made up some of the words because no one could make out what he said in the original. ha!

When Nottz sent me that batch - that particular beat stood out. It had the same chord progression as the Otis Leville, so I just went with it.”

A couple of weeks ago Drama came down to shoot a show. When he shoots a show, it is primarily in film. Many photographers don't really dabble in film any more because of the turn over time, but those who dabble in it usually get results that a DSLR cannot touch.

They say that it is a dying art much like digging for records. But for most it is an art that cannot be replaced.

It's been another long weekend with events and such. I've been pushing more paper work instead of taking photos. Honestly taking pictures of stakes of papers and lists of emails isn't very entertaining, not to me and sure as hell not to you.

I was able to take a shot after The Cipher, a hiphop freestyle session brought to you by the Prophets of Sound and TNA.

I also caught up with Erok (EK5OBITION) today. He's recently been taking on a new hobby of photography. ~~Most~~ people just pick up a camera and start taking photos of their environment. Now, I guess Erok's environment must consist of backdrops, multiple speed lights, props and other professional equipment.

I snuck into a photo-shoot Erok was doing with his friend BJ who was being the 2nd camera. They were shooting DJ Mike Bless.

In between sets I chopped it up with Mike about random music and just how the scene is currently. One of the main reasons was while I was out at a festival, my co-workers made huge decisions on an item that I was working personally and they made all those decisions over BBM (shaking head, waving fist in air!) I've looked at my archive and I have realized that July 2010 is the slowest month on my blog. I would apologize, but if you have seen me in person July 2010 hasn't been the slowest month.

It is festival season here in Southern California and I've been in between festivals with 200,000 people to small ones with 1,000. You would expect that I would be covering many of them with my camera, but I have been contracted to work the backbone of these festivals. From on stage to backstage, artist liaison, to production, to a volunteer, working behind the scenes is a different animal.

Muggy, Sunny, Rainy

Really weird weather in Southern California right now. This morning was muggy, the day was sunny (100+), and during dusk it was raining. I have a color shot of the first picture and because of the clouds with the sunset, it came out with a natural sepia tone as you can tell with the second picture.

The second picture was shot because I wanted test out a shot for an upcoming shoot. More on that later...

It has been more than a week, more like 3. I’ve been up and down the west coast without my camera and the only image that I can share with you is this one taken from my brother’s camera.

But the reason why I’ve been up and down is for something far more personal and for me to share it would be going against the standard that I’ve tried to set for myself on this blog. The one thing that I will say is may she rest in paradise.

Bad News Beard

so it has been more than a year since this gentlemen has been on my blog, if i remember correctly he was on the first post about beer pong, actually the first post overall since i relaunched... but i've digressed, from why i am writing this.

"on water" has carried a number of titles when it comes to referencing our relationship (no homo.) from bay area native, friend, co-worker, drunken comrade to even roommate. so when he's visiting it is always a joy catching up on whatever adventures we've come across since we've last seen each other.

but this time his visit was different.

he brought bad luck with him like the bubonic plague and it wasn't actually him on the receiving end. the bad luck was reflected onto his friends.

Here is "Results" Timeline to better put into perspective what 48 hours with the "Bad News Beard" can bring:
Monday 7pm: I get a call from "On Water" saying how he's in town and wanted a place to hang out before hanging with a couple of other friends.
Monday 8pm: Other Friends don't call back.

Results: I wasn't a friend to hang out with, I was the concelation prize under door #2 that isn't the fancy red car, but the no name brand cleaning products.

Monday 9pm: I ask "On Water," "Lets go grab a beer."
Monday 10pm: No places are open

Results: We both forget it is memorial day weekend and everything is closed and decide to have a drink at home.

Monday 11pm: On Water: If we're not going out we should just do work and catch up.
Monday 1130pm: We cannot do work due to these things: Lost USB/Firewire cable, Website server crash.

Results: This actually resulted in no work and going to sleep early, which I usually NEVER DO.

Tuesday 830am: We go out for breakfest with a couple of friends before we part our ways.

Results: If you know me, I never wake up this early unless I have to. In this case... I didn't have too.

Tuesday 1030am: After breakfast is done, I realized that this is going to be a pretty expensive breakfast.

Results: Breakfast itself wasn't expensive. The violation for not letting a pedestrian walk 10 feet is expensive.

Tuesday 11am: "On Water" is uploading video onto his computer.

Result: After uploading about 1 hour's worth of content, his computer only actually captures 6 minuets worth.

Tuesday 12pm: "On Water" Leaves.

Results: Bliss.

"On Water"'s last statement upon reading the time line (of course I paraphrased this):

"Hey, it isn't that you're the cancellation prize, its just that I had work to do with that friend.
They flaked. And my awesomeness splodge all over you."

Regardless it gave me a story to tell. I haven't done a blog post like this in a while.

on our last day for a fun day, pudge and i decided to head into DTLA for a few errands and pure bordem.

we decided to hit up Little Tokyo to say waddup to the homies...

all over Little Tokyo, there are these signs. sure they're informative, but if you notice closely, these are some of the commonly used fonts in the world and let alone in streetwear. leave it to the japanese to make something informative stylish.

so i've been up all night working on the two trailers for EK5OBITION "2nd Installation" of our 2010 series. it has been a while since i've working on moving images and i forgot how exhausting it is for something that is 30 seconds long. honestly the trailers didn't come out the way that i wanted, but everyone else likes it, so to hell with my own opinion.

many people believe in little sayings and superstitious, ie: a rabbit foot, a check made out to yourself for a billion dollars, an old fortune cookie saying in your wallet, etc...personally i don't believe in many because someone else told you it was good luck, but if you honestly believe in it, and you convince me you believe in it, i won't use witty banter to make you feel bad.

this is something that i've seen and heard, but no one has ever put it on the internet until recently.

What’s with the cork hanging on your saddle?

“In days of old, when bike riders were bold,
and a fixed gear was all they’d need,
with lots of torque they attached a cork,
and rode away with speed.”

“Corks in cycling vernacular date back at least to the 1920’s, probably originating at the steeply banked wood track indoor 6-Day Bike Races. During the halcyon years of cycling in the tens, twenties, and thirties, trackside at the 6-Day race was one of the places where the social set went to be seen. Sitting next to the action at their infield tables, it was chic for the “swells” to sip champagne and sine while giving the track stewards money for sprint laps to liven up the sensuous aroma of the various rub down lotions had more than a few femme fatales asking about and turning an eye or ankle to the studly - er - sturdy bike racers.

Soon the jargon evolved. When a cork was popped, power was released, bubbles escaped, the elixir went flat, no more oomph or energy. So, dropping your cork of having no more cork means you’re out of it, flat, dead, pooped, no more stuff. Ergo, the racers would hang a cork on their bikes so they’d never be “out” of cork. There would always be one more effort left for a “jam” or sprint. Conversely, if a rider said he “uncorked” a sprint, well, he “jumped”, “wound” it up, and took off. Or, if he pulled their corks, he went so hard the opposition got “dropped”, “shook” off, and had no cork left. They were decimated. HAH! Great Fun!

Commercially, bar plugs were not yet in standard production. In spills, riders could easily get gouged by the edges of the handlebar and stem tubes. Ouch! Instead of just taping over the openings, our friendly cork came to the rescue! Corks were filed and/or sanded, inserted into the openings, and often painted to match the rider’s bike of team colors. The corks were also used to plug the bottom of the fork crown. Dirt and moisture were kept out. Light, inexpensive and effective.
Now you know why Ted has one on each of his bikes, road and track. A subtle reminder that no matter how tired you think you are, you’ve always got a little cork left!

Even if… I’m just a nightlife photographer. Even if I’d be lost without my onboard flash. Even if “art” is not what I’m here for. Even if I’m really just a part of the light show circus. When we approach our final descent I realize that it’s all still fresh in my mind and I remember all the details. But then again… “you’re so vain, you’ll probably think this blog is about me, won’t you, won’t you…”"

i am a jazz fan, and i am a remix fan; with jazz it is a genre that stirs up emotions that surface when the needle hits the wax. remixe's always allow for a different point of view of something that you are already familiar with.
